Demi Lovato is taking a stand against bullying as the new ambassador for Secret’s Mean Stinks campaign.  The 20-year-old X Factor judge told People Magazine knows what it’s like to be bullied.

“I had a really tough time when I was in middle school,”Demi Lovato said. “People would write ‘hate petitions’ and send them around to be signed. They’d have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They’d come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away.”

Now Lovato is using her celebrity to make a difference and is excited to be part of Secret’s campaign. “I heard about the program last year, and thought it was such a great opportunity,” she said. “They’re really trying to put an end to bullying.”

On Thursday, she met with a group of girls at New York City’s Young Women’s Leadership School. Demi Lovato told the students about the campaign’s “ganging up for good” initiative, and then asked the girls to commit to a “Drama Free School Year.”

Those who promised not to bully, then joined Lovato in painting their pinky fingers with blue polish as a symbol of their commitment to the cause.
